Preparing for a Strong Start Together

Planning a wedding can feel exciting and joyful. But building a life together also brings important conversations. You may love each other deeply—yet still feel unsure about how certain parts of life together will unfold.

Premarital counselling creates space to slow down and explore these questions before patterns of conflict or misunderstanding take hold.

You may be wondering…

  • Different views on money and financial priorities

  • Unclear roles or expectations in marriage

  • Tension around in-laws or family boundaries

  • Avoiding difficult conversations

  • Disagreements about children or future plans

  • Fear of repeating unhealthy relationship patterns

That’s where premarital counselling in Toronto can help. At Voyage Couples Therapy, we use the research-based Prepare-Enrich framework to guide meaningful conversations about communication, expectations, and life decisions. Couples who invest in premarital work often feel more confident entering marriage, with studies showing the risk of divorce may decrease by up to 30%.

Areas of Focus for Premarital Counselling

  • Money & Financial Decisions

When partners bring different beliefs, habits, or anxieties about money into the relationship. We help couples explore financial values, expectations, and decision-making so money becomes a shared conversation rather than a source of conflict.

  • Roles & Expectations in Marriage

When partners carry different ideas about responsibilities, independence, or what a partnership should look like. Therapy helps couples talk openly about expectations and create agreements that feel fair and supportive for both partners.

  • Communication & Conflict Patterns

When difficult conversations turn into arguments, shutdown, or misunderstanding. Premarital counselling helps couples slow down communication, understand each other’s emotional needs, and repair disagreements with care.

  • Family & In-Law Boundaries

When love for family exists alongside pressure, expectations, or differing traditions. We support couples in creating healthy boundaries and navigating family relationships while protecting the partnership.

  • Intimacy & Emotional Connection

When partners want closeness but struggle to talk about affection, vulnerability, or sexual needs. Therapy provides a respectful space to explore intimacy and deepen emotional connection.

  • Shared Vision for the Future

When couples are thinking about children, careers, culture, faith, or lifestyle choices. We help partners explore their hopes and values so they can move forward with clarity and alignment

Our Premarital Counselling Process

Our therapists provide premarital counselling from our High Park clinic in West Toronto and online across Ontario in a way that is supportive, collaborative, and emotionally grounded. The goal is to help couples understand each other more deeply, strengthen communication, and prepare thoughtfully for the life they are building together.

  • We begin by meeting with both partners to learn about your relationship story, what brings you to premarital counselling, and what you hope to build together in marriage. This session helps us understand your values, goals, and the areas you would like to explore before taking the next step.

  • After the first session, both partners complete the Prepare-Enrich assessment, a research-based relationship tool used in premarital counselling. The assessment highlights your relationship strengths and identifies areas where further conversation and understanding may be helpful.

Your therapist reviews the results with you and uses them to guide future sessions.

  • Future sessions are shaped by the assessment results and the goals you share with your therapist. Each session focuses on important themes that influence long-term relationships, such as communication, expectations, finances, family dynamics, intimacy, and future planning.

Premarital counselling is typically a short-term, focused process lasting approximately 7–9 sessions, designed to help couples enter marriage with greater clarity, confidence, and connection.
